What is the Instrumental Music Program of Excellence?
This is a Program of Excellence for out of catchment students who have exceptional musical ability who play an orchestral instrument at a level well beyond their age. This is an enrolment pathway for those students to join our acclaimed music department. Limited spaces are available and offers are not made every year.
Goals of the program are to:
- Provide advanced musicians an opportunity to further develop their skills in Instrumental Music, in a challenging environment, with other like-minded musicians.
- Allow students to learn through attendance at a group lesson each week and participation in at least one co-curricular Instrumental Music ensemble.
- Provide multiple opportunities for students to participate in a large co-curricular music ensemble program and grow as a musician within the Music program.
- Foster a joy of music and life-long learning
Duration
The Instrumental Music Program of Excellence is a 6-year program. Successful applicants are expected to remain in the program for the entirety of their enrolment at Mansfield State High School.
Subjects
This program is limited to a very small number of students. These students will study:
- English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities
- Either Japanese or French as their language elective for a semester with HPE on the alternative semester
- An Arts elective and a Technology elective for alternative semesters
- Remain in at least one ensemble for the duration of their enrolment.
Cost
Standard general student levy and subject fees apply. Instrumental ensemble fees and choral fees apply.
Who can apply?
The Instrumental Program of Excellence is only available to out of catchment students. Students interested in applying for entry into this Program of Excellence must indicate this option on their enrolment application to be considered. Not every student that applies will be granted an audition.
Application process
The entry point for the Instrumental Music Program of Excellence is Year 7. Students wishing to complete an application for this program will complete an enrolment application including the Program of Excellence forms part 1 and part 2. Applications for entry in 2025 close on Friday 24 May 2024.
Applicants will are short listed for auditions will receive a letter detailing dates and times to complete an audition and theory exam. The audition is 10 minutes in length; play an 'own choice' song that shows your musical ability; also sight-reading and scales.
How are students selected?
Students are short listed on the merits and strength of their application data as requested in the application and enrolment process. Short listed applicants will be offered an audition. The school makes decisions based on the our interpretations of the submitted data and the audition to select the students who present as being the most suitable for this program.
Positions are not offered every year in this program.
