Congratulations to our Year 10 debating team of Ryyan, Maryem, William, Valentina, and Kira who progressed to the Queensland Debating Union State Grand Final against St Joseph's College (Gregory Terrace) at Somerville House on 27 October. After a tightly contested debate, Mansfield came out on top and won the Grand Final. A monumental achievement for our school!
Students debated the topic: That decisions, including spending, during natural disasters/emergencies should be entirely controlled by emergency services rather than politicians. Students on both sides of the debate presented some incredibly complex and well-reasoned arguments, highlighting the complexities of natural disasters and who is the best person to lead the response in times of crisis. Our students spoke with poise and polish, demonstrating how incredibly capable they are.
Also recognised on the night was Ms Madeline Wust for her exceptional work as Mansfield's debating coordinator. Ms Wust was awarded the 2021 Queensland Debating Union, Debating Coordinator of the Year for her outstanding level of commitment to debating service above and beyond QDU expectations. Congratulations Ms Wust.
